Not quite a Grant & Danny’s Tony’s Mailbag, as Grant Paulsen was off yet again on Friday – so instead, we got Danny’s Grab Bag, where listeners (and producers) got to ask Mr. Rouhier a big ol’ slew of questions…and one was really interesting look into his personality:
Besides Alex Ovechkin, who is ‘the easy and obvious one because every goal is one step closer to a milestone,’ who is his favorite current DC athlete to watch, and why?
“This is actually not an easy question for the moment, because I haven’t seen any of the new Wizards; I’ve seen Jordan Poole from afar and I’m a Tyus Jones guy but he hasn’t played here,” Danny said. “There are plenty of nominees from the Commanders, and there’s no one else on the Capitals, because Backstrom just isn’t that guy anymore.”
So then it has to be a National? Indeed, and it’s No. 1 on the scorecard and Danny’s heart.
“MacKenzie Gore, and here’s why: he hasn’t been unbelievable yet, but I love that he’s mean,” Danny said. “I love he’s a competitive jerk on the mound. I don’t want my aces to be nice on the field; off the field, he can be as nice as he wants, but on the mound, I want him to be the guy who says ‘don’t bother me’ on the day he’s pitching.”
Danny then recalled a moment with Max Scherzer back in the day where Scherzer showed that bulldog mentality on his day to pitch, scaring Rouhier half to death.

“I was in the clubhouse, and it slipped my mind Scherzer was pitching that day, but all I said was, ‘Hey Max!’” Danny recalled. “As soon as that came out of my fat face, I realized he was pitching that day…and Max looked at me like, if his eyes could shoot lasers, he would have evaporated my insides and boiled me alive. All I could do was mutter sorry, and hear a couple guys chuckle about it.”
MacKenzie Gore has that, in Danny’s eyes, and that’s why he loves watching him pitch.
“He has a long way to go – the stuff and upside is there, but there’s something really exciting to me about watching him go about it every fifth day.”
