The New Orleans Pelicans are set to hire Stan Van Gundy as the franchise’s next head coach, according to a report from ESPN’s Andrew Lopez.
Van Gundy who last recently served as coach of the Detroit Pistons in 2018 has compiled a 523-384 record as a head coach.
The hire comes after the Pelicans parted ways with former head coach Alvin Gentry who spent the past five seasons in New Orleans and compiled a 175-225 record, while guiding the franchise to one playoff appearance.
New Orleans finished last season 30-42 and Gentry was fired in August after New Orleans ended its stint in the NBA’s bubble with a 2-6 record, and were eliminated from playoff contention.
Van Gundy inherits a roster that includes rookie of the year candidate Zion Williamson and a group of other young players including Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and Jaxson Hayes, and he seems excited to get started.
