The NFL trade deadline has come and gone and Dwayne Haskins is still a member of the Washington Football Team.
It was reported earlier this week that a Haskins trade was “inevitable,” whether it would happen now or later. Since it did not happen at the deadline, the question remains whether or not Haskins is part of the Washington Football Team’s future.
Head coach Ron Rivera, who made the decision to bench Haskins after Week 4, insists that the franchise has not given up on the 23-year-old quarterback.
“It’s funny, I benched the guy and it’s like everybody thinks his career is over here in Washington,” Rivera told Rich Eisen on Thursday, via ProFootballTalk. “It’s not. The kid has an NFL arm, it’s just a matter of him developing.”
Washington is 2-5 and if they continue to lose games they may be in a position to draft a highly touted quarterback in the next draft class such as Justin Fields, or depending on how things play out, even Trevor Lawrence.
Haskins, a 2019 first-round pick out of Ohio State, has played in 13 career NFL games since he was thrust in as the starter last year. He has thrown 11 touchdowns to 10 interceptions for 2,304 yards while going 3-10 in that span.
“Everybody forgets he played 12 games of college football and then last year he didn’t really get into the swing of things until the end of the year,” Rivera said. “I did everything I could to give him 11 weeks as the No. 1 [QB].”
