It finally happened.
After a year of speculation and rumors, the Washington Redskins have agreed to trade left tackle Trent Williams to the NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.
The Redskins, who previously had hoped to receive a high draft pick in exchange for the seven-time Pro Bowl left tackle, will have to settle for a 2020 5th-round draft pick and a 2021 3rd-round draft pick. Williams will reunite with former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. It is likely they will restructure the soon-to-be 32-year-old left tackle's contract, which has one year remaining.
Williams' agent Vincent Taylor said in a statement after the trade after nine years in Washington, "the time has come to part ways."
"Trent Williams is ready to get back to competing in the NFL and is glad to be a part of a great organization like the San Francisco 49ers," said in a statement.
"I'm thankful this is over," Williams said to reporters. "I thank Dan (Snyder) and the organization for all they've done for me. Still a lot of love for the fans and that locker room. Now I'm focusing on being the best player I can possibly be for the San Francisco 49ers."
The saga began before the 2019 season, with Williams did not report for mandatory minicamp in June 2019. Williams sat for the entire 2019 season. He revealed the full story of how the relationship broke down with 106.7 The Fan's Craig Hoffman in November. At the time, before Bruce Allen was fired by the organization and Ron Rivera was hired as head coach, Williams said the bridge was burned.
Rivera and Washington wasted no time in drafting a replacement in LSU's Saahdiq Charles with the 108th overall pick in the NFL Draft.
I want what's best for the team. That said, as life long Redskins fan that also talks about them everyday for a living, I am beyond thrilled Trent Williams is gone. It feels like opening a window on the first day of spring after a long winter.
