It seems like almost by the time you read this, Kevin Willard will be leaving Maryland for Villanova, a move that could end up being the worst-kept secret in sports thanks mostly to Willard himself – who gave an almost verbatim answer about his future Thursday night as he did the night Seton Hall was eliminated from the tournament right before he accepted the job in College Park.
Rob Dauster from The Field of 68 joined a very irate JP Finlay to talk about the situation Friday, and, well, all anger aside, he can see exactly why Willard would want Villanova, and why ‘Nova would want him.
But, yeah, he also gets why Terps faithful are livid with how this all went down.
“This has been a memorable season where it feels like they've kind of rejuvenated the excitement around Maryland basketball; the passion is always there, but the product on the floor has not always been up to the standards that are expected by that fan base,” Dauster said. “So, I think there’s a level of bitterness there. It’s like, how are you gonna come down here for two years, lead us to this season, and then before it even ends, you're gonna be looking for somewhere else and torpedo what could have been a memorable Final Four kind of a run because you got an offer from somebody else? It just feels like that's not the right way to go about doing that, and I think that's how Maryland fans probably feel right now.”
