The NFL’s overtime rules are kind of easy to navigate in the regular season – if the team with first possession scores a touchdown, the game is over, so you want the ball first. In the postseason, however, where games can’t end in a tie, both teams get a chance at possession regardless, so there’s no harm in not getting first possession.
Kyle Shanahan said after the Super Bowl that he chose to receive in OT in that game because he wanted the ball third, in case the game remained tied in any way after both teams possessed the ball – but given the Niners would get the ball no matter what, was that the right move?
