With the No. 47 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders beefed up their secondary a bit more by selecting Illinois DB Jartavius Martin.
The selection was announced by London Fletcher, who spent the final seven seasons of his 16-year NFL career in D.C.
Martin played both corner and safety over his five years with the Illini, but he posted the fourth-best tackling grade in the nation among cornerbacks in 2022, at (90.4), according to Pro Football Focus. He was an All-Big Ten selection after leading the Illini with 51 solo tackles and notching 64 total tackles (three for loss), three interceptions, one sack, 11 pass breakups, one quarterback hurry, and two forced fumbles.
Over his career, he played in 55 total games and had seven picks, 222 tackles, and 30 passes defensed while playing almost every position in the secondary. He adds another weapon to the defensive backfield now, after the Commanders selected Mississippi State corner Emmanuel Forbes in the first round.
