With the No. 97 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Washington Commanders beefed up their offensive line by selecting Arkansas center Ricky Stromberg.

The selection was a compensatory pick following the conclusion of the third round, given to the team after Brandon Scherff signed with the Jaguars last March.

Stromberg was originally a guard, playing both spots before moving to the middle as a sophomore, and he ended up as a two-time All-SEC selection and the winner of the 2022 Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the best blocker in the SEC.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 313 pounds, Stromberg’s NFL.com draft grade was a 6.22 – “Will eventually be an average starter” – and his overall NextGen Stats overall combine score of 80 was third among centers.

His scouting report says that he is “a center prospect with enough athleticism and strength to be considered scheme independent. He generates decent movement at the point of attack and is well-schooled with landmarks as a zone blocker, and has an innate feel for angles and positioning that leads to some unexpected block wins. Stromberg has a chance to become a starting center with the flexibility to play guard if needed.”
