David Archer tells BMitch & Finlay he thinks Jayden Daniels is ahead of where Lamar Jackson was as a rookie
David Archer played 38 NFL games over four seasons in Atlanta, and then one season and one lone appearance with the Redskins in 1988 – so he’s seen QB play in both cities.
He’s now a Falcons radio analyst, so when he joined BMitch & Finlay on Monday, the bulk of the talk was about the overall play in Sunday’s game that saw the Commanders clinch a playoff berth, with a little about the Kirk Cousins/Michael Penix QB switch down there.
Oh, and then there was some love for Jayden Daniels, who had the former WLAF World Bowl MVP comparing him to above a multiple-time MVP.
“The biggest thing they're gonna have to govern there is he's not the biggest guy in the world from a body standpoint; he’s a tough kid, but you're going to take shots in the NFL you didn’t take in college, and so he's got to be careful with that,” Archer said. “But he’s a tough guy, he’s a smart guy, and he's a much better passer than I think anybody knows. I think he’s gonna be a dynamic passer – he’s well beyond what Lamar was coming into the league as a guy that can run throwing the football. He has a much better understanding of throwing the ball and look what Lamar's turned into – I think that's what you're looking at with Jayden Daniels. He understands the tempo of the game and the moment.”
Archer revealed that the Falcons brought in former DC Defenders QB Emory Jones to the practice squad last week to try to mimic what Daniels would do as part of the scout team, but that only went so far.
“He tried to stay within the confines of what Kliff wanted to do with him in the first half, but when he ran that one zone read play and Jayden picked up about 20 yards on the left edge, I looked at my broadcast partner and said, ‘they just discovered they need to let their guy go,’” Archer said. “In the second half they took the reins off him, and I think Jayden felt it. (The defense) worked for a half, but ultimately, he got to be the guy he is, and I don't think there's a lot of teams are gonna have an answer for him.”
He’s also impressed with what former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn has done here in DC.
“This team has taken on the persona of their coach, who is a tough guy, and a guy that he puts his arms around all the players. He took us to a Super Bowl here in Atlanta, and I love what he’s doing up there,” Archer said. “He's got a good young quarterback, and there's a number of good players on their team, but they play as a unit and play together. He’s an inclusive guy, and you almost feel like there’s coaching going on, but there’s also a collaborative feel where you feel like you're involved with game planning and what’s going on at practice. You’re a part of things, and it’s all for one, one for all. That’s what Dan talks about: brotherhood and everyone being in the fight together. A lot of times it’s rhetoric, but he gets guys to believe in it. He’s a fun guy to be around, and I think that makes it fun to go to work.”
And, Commanders fans, as you helped them finish off a 7-2 home slate this season, Archer was impressed with you, too.
“I had the misfortune to play in Washington as an opposing player, and then was fortunate to be there in 1988, and see that crowd base when they were going to Super Bowls – and last night felt like one of those moments,” Archer said. “That was a great crowd; they really helped their team last night, so kudos to the Commanders fan base. I thought it was a really cool atmosphere, felt like a playoff game.”
