Valerie Biberaj is the head of community relations and foundation efforts for the Commanders, so "everything we do in that realm comes through my department."
Brian Mitchell and JP Finlay are big supporters of Toys for Toys, as are the Commanders, who have an expanded partnership with the effort that doesn't just include Christmas gift drives.
"There are so many ways to deepen that relationship, and one example is our Washington Reads program, where we go into schools and work with fourth and fifth-grade students on literacy programs," Biberaj said. "We have Christmas in July as well and there are so many ways we can get involved with them outside the holidays."
Some local high school football teams have also reached out to Biberaj, as have some church communities, so the Commanders' Foundation, which has given back over $31 million in 20 years, is expanding as well.
"We reached around 65,000 children and families last year over 60 events, and we're rebuilding our youth football program and the Washington Reads program," Biberaj said.
Just another step, and another example, of how things are changing under new ownership.
"New ownership has highlighted community as one of their three major priorities, so we're going to build even further," Biberaj said. "We're also building out our military engagement and social justice programming, and we've been hosting a lot of clinics here at our park."
