Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales were interviewed at an event on Wednesday night, and a LOT was revealed in that conversation, including the fact that Redskins simply is not, as already mentioned, on the table as a rebrand for the Commanders.
Brian Mitchell was there, as were a who’s who of movers and shakers, including Mayor Bowser – who, according to BMitch, gave a speech that amounted to “let’s get the Commanders back to DC.”
“She didn't worry about all that other crap because like I said before, you can say what you want about the other sports, but when you truly look at how professional sports work in this country, football is king,” Mitchell said.
“I think the discussion centering around, well, it’s only 10 games a year…that doesn’t make a difference, because there are plenty of events going on,” JP Finlay replied. “If you do it right, you can build facilities outside, even if it's just a central place for flag football or youth sports. You can make it a multi-use facility, so that notion is antiquated and insincere.”
To that point, BMitch noted how Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales were surely aware of Beyonce stopping at FedEx Field this summer, and how much money that brought in – but are also aware that Taylor Swift avoiding it after she came to FedEx on her last tour hurt, and the World Cup also turned down FedEx.
With a new stadium in DC, though, that may change, and as JP said, Final Fours, WrestleMania, and other big events are back in play, and besides, 10 football games may draw more money than 40 or 50 basketball or hockey games anyway, so it’s still a revenue driver on a per-game basis.
Take a listen above as BMitch & Finlay go in-depth on the idea of a new stadium in DC proper, and how the city and the government can re-configure the RFK space to get it done!
