The Washington Commanders have acquired kicker Cade York in a trade with the Cleveland Browns, according to multiple reports.
Washington is sending a conditional seventh-round pick to Cleveland for the 23-year-old kicker, as first reported by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.
In another move on Thursday morning, Washington announced they had released kicker Riley Patterson, who has struggled in the preseason and signed safety Sheldrick Redwine.
Patterson is the third kicker the Commanders have released this offseason after Ramiz Ahmed was released following the first preseason game amid his own struggles during training camp and veteran Brandon McManus in June.
York was originally a fourth-round pick (124th overall) by the Browns in 2022 and had an up-and-down rookie season, making 24 of 32 field goal attempts (with three misses inside 39 yards) and 35 of 37 extra points.
York converted four of seven kicks from beyond 50 yards, with a long of 58.
After struggling in the preseason, he was waived before the 2023 campaign. He spent time on the practice squad with the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants. He did not feature in a game last year.
York returned to the Browns this past offseason to deputize Dustin Hopkins in the preseason. The Browns traded for Hopkins from the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023, which led to York's release.
In three seasons at LSU, York made 54 of 66 field goals and 164 of 168 extra points from the much closer college distance.
Before his release, Patterson missed field goal attempts from 39 yards, 43 yards, and 49 yards this preseason and made two, from 46 yards and 38 yards. Ahmed converted an extra point and his one FG attempt in the first preseason game, a 40-yarder, before his release.
They Commanders signed McManus early in the offseason, but he was released soon after he was accused of sexual assault in a lawsuit from an incident during his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
