Danny: Commanders coaching staff should be fired if lineman they passed on starts as a rookie

The Commanders surprisingly took Jartavius Martin in the second round, their second straight cornerback taken to begin their 2023 NFL Draft.

Immediately afterward, the Buccaneers selected offensive lineman Cody Mauch from North Dakota State, a player Washington could have used considering its needs along the offensive line.

With that in mind, Danny says if Mauch is starting for Tampa Bay in Week 1, he would fire the entire Commanders coaching staff if he were the new owner.

“Here’s what I would do if I owned the team,” Danny said. “If Cody Mauch starts, you’re all fired. If the first game of the season, he trots onto the field with his long hair and missing tooth, and he starts for an NFL team, you all pack up your stuff, you don’t get to coach the game, you’re all fired.

“Pro Football Focus, it’s not gospel, but they had [Martin] as the 94th ranked prospect, they reached and took him at 47, part of a really good Illionois secondary…they view their offensive line as fixed and solved, sort of, and then went ahead and picked some linemen in the next couple rounds. Puzzling, bizarre, bad roster construction. I was livid. Nothing against the player, I actually thought he was fine. Probably picked a little early, maybe a round early, but fine.”

Danny doesn’t hate Martin as a prospect, but felt the Commanders didn’t prioritize bolstering the offensive line, and if the player they passed on is an NFL starter as a rookie, heads should roll.

“But that offensive lineman, that might start for somebody and went one pick later,” Danny said. “If he does, I would be livid.”
