Grant has heard the criticisms regarding the Commanders return for Chase Young, but he has heard that Washington had better deals in place, and those fell apart due to concerns about the former No. 2 overall pick’s injury history.
“I think they were hoping to get a little more back for Chase Young,” Grant said. “Based on some of the things I heard, some of the rumblings, it sounds like they had a deal in place for Chase that would have gotten them more. I think they were working on a trade with Baltimore where they were gonna get a second-round pick, and some of the medical stuff that came back wasn’t what the Ravens were hoping, so they weren’t able to pull off the deal.
“They were working on another deal with San Francisco, the compensation change, a second-round pick would have been involved. It turned out, teams doing their due diligence, Chase having had a very serious injury, they just weren’t able to get as much as they wanted to.”
Young’s injuries limited the first three years of his NFL career, as he made just 11 starts in his final two full seasons with the Commanders after getting a Pro Bowl nod in his rookie year. He has appeared in three games for the 49ers since being dealt for a third-round pick, but has made no starts, logging 1.5 sacks with his new team.
“I keep seeing them get beat up for what they got for Chase Young,” Grant said. “I think their process was really good. I think they have gotten a little bit of a raw deal in the conversation about the compensation for him. They were working on something. I think they were gonna do a little better than they did, and because of his injury, they weren’t able to.”
