The Commanders were active on the first day of legal tampering, and they were active right as the new league year opened Wednesday afternoon, too, adding the following players on one-year deals:
RE-SIGN QB Marcus Mariota ($8m)
-Mariota gets a slight raise over the $6 million he got last offseason to come in to be Jayden Daniels’ mentor and backup. The former No. 2 pick appeared in three games last year – his two big appearances including taking over for an injured Daniels in Week 7 against Carolina and playing the second half in the season finale in Dallas, both wins – and was 34-of-44 for 364 yards and four touchdowns. He also added 18 rushes for 92 yards and a score.
SIGN DT Eddie Goldman (terms unknown)
Goldman, a former star at Friendship Collegiate Academy, returns home after playing all 17 games with the Falcons in 2024 – just his second campaign this decade. The 31-year-old opted out of the 2020 COVID season and then retired for two years after playing for the Bears in 2021.
He returned with Atlanta last year on a $1.2 million deal, notching 16 tackles and one sack. The former second-round pick of the Bears in 2015 has 191 tackles (19 for loss) 14 sacks, and two fumble recoveries over seven seasons.
SIGN CB Jonathan Jones ($5.5 million plus $1m in incentives)
Jones has spent the last nine years in New England, where he notched 436 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 11 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles (with two recoveries) and 55 passes defensed. The 31-year-old became a full-time starter in 2022, and last year, had 58 tackles and six passes defensed while playing both outside and as the nickel (422 snaps outside, 139 in the slot).
The signing was broken not long after former Commanders CB Benjamin St-Juste agreed to a deal with the Chargers, so now it’s a Lattimore-Jones-Sainristil trio on the corners.
SIGN DE Deatrich Wise (up to $5 million)
Wise, a fourth-round pick in 2017, comes over after starting 61 of 126 games played in New England. He had 29 tackles, five sacks, and three passes defensed last year, and has notched 314 tackles (34 for loss), 34 sacks, 12 passes defensed, and five forced fumbles in his career.
