Commanders release CB Emmanuel Forbes, place RB Austin Ekeler on IR

And then, there were none.

The Commanders announced Saturday that they have released CB Emmanuel Forbes Jr., the last remaining first-round pick from the Ron Rivera era, among a series of roster moves.

RB Austin Ekeler was also placed on IR, while the team elevated kicker Zane Gonzalez and DT Carl Davis for Sunday’s game against Tennessee.

Forbes, who was the final first-round pick of the Rivera era at No. 16 overall in 2023, played in 14 games as a rookie, but was benched during that season and never found his footing in the Dan Quinn regime. He was inactive for four of 12 games and did not play in two others, and in the six he did appear in, he played 10 percent of defensive snaps or less in three of them.

He finishes his career in DC with 45 tackles (two for loss), two interceptions, and 12 passes defensed in 20 games.

Ekeler, who has 701 yards from scrimmage this season, suffered a concussion at the tail end of last week’s loss to the Cowboys, and will miss the Tennessee game and the first two after the bye at a minimum.

Gonzalez has kicked in two games this year in place of the again-injured Austin Seibert, making all seven of his kicks, and this is his final practice squad elevation.

Davis, who was a third-round pick of the Ravens back in 2015, has 2.5 sacks and 68 tackles in 75 career games for six teams.
