A familiar face is back in the Commanders’ QB room, as the team has signed Josh Johnson to a one-year deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, and he will likely be the third-string QB behind Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota, replacing Jeff Driskel, who signed with Houston.
Johnson, 38 is back for his second stint in DC, having played for the then-Redskins in 2018, making three starts and throwing for 590 yards in four total appearances. He spent last year in Baltimore, playing 36 snaps in six games as a backup to Lamar Jackson.
The veteran has been with a record 14 organizations, Washington one of xx he’s been with multiple times, since being a fifth-round pick of the Bucs in 2008. He has also played in the pre-COVID iteration of the XFL as well as the Alliance of American Football.
Perhaps his most notable appearance came in the 2023 NFC Championship Game, as he had signed with the 49ers in December and ended up pressed into duty in relief of an injured Brock Purdy, who tore his UCL in the first quarter when his arm hit another player’s helmet. Johnson himself also left that game with a concussion early in the third quarter – forcing San Francisco to finish the game going back to Purdy, who attempted just two short passes the rest of the way in a 31-8 loss.
