Commanders trade RB Brian Robinson Jr. to 49ers

The Brian Robinson era is officially over in DC, as reports have the Commanders trading B-Rob to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2026 sixth-round pick.

Robinson was the Commanders’ third-round pick in 2022, the penultimate draft overseen by Ron Rivera, and after missing the first few weeks of his rookie season recovering from a shooting, he ran for 797 yards and two touchdowns in 12 games.

He was the Commanders’ nominal starter in 2023 and 2024, the former his best season as he had 1,101 yards from scrimmage and nine total TD, following that up with 958 yards and 8 TD last season.

However, Robinson missed a handful of games due to injury the last two seasons and never ran for more than 800 yards in a year – his 799 in 2025 is his career-high – and the Commanders were reportedly shopping him after seeing impressive returns from Chris Rodriguez and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt early in camp.

Robinson did not play in Monday’s preseason game against the Bengals as a result of that situation, and now, he is headed to San Francisco, where the depth chart behind Christian McCaffrey includes Isaac Guerendo (who ran for 420 yarda and 4 TD in limited action in 2024), fifth-round pick Jordan James, and a handful of veteran journeymen.

Meanwhile, the Commanders add a day 3 pick to supplement a pick set that lost its second and fourth-rounders in the Laremy Tunsil trade, and will likely go with a rotation of Croskey-Merritt, Rodriguez, Austin Ekeler, and perhaps Jeremy McNichols in their backfield for now.
