The last two Commanders offensive coordinators under Ron Rivera have new homes in the NFL.
Over the weekend, news broke that the New York Jets are hiring Scott Turner as their passing game coordinator, and the Chicago Bears have hired Eric Bieniemy as their running backs coach.
Bieniemy, 55, returns to the NFL after one year as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for his friend DeShaun Foster at UCLA – a season in which the Bruines rankes near the bottom of Division I FBS in most offensive categories.
He had the same roles with the Commanders in 2023 after spending 10 seasons in various roles in Kansas City, and his hiring in Chicago has a lot of connections: Bears GM Ryan Poles was in KC’s front office from 2009-21 in the scouting and player personnel departments, and team president and CEO Kevin Warren was the Vikings’ Chief Administrative Officer in Minnesota when Bieniemy was the running backs coach there from 2006-10.
Turner, 42, was let go as the Commanders’ OC after 2022 and spent the past two seasons as the Raiders’ passing game coordinator, also adding interim OC in the second half of 2024 after the Raiders fired Luke Getsy nine games into the season.
