The Marty Party continues, as former Commanders GM Martin Mayhew is still around in the organization, and was reportedly involved in the head coaching search that landed on Dan Quinn?
Grant Paulsen read an excerpt from an Albert Breer story revealing Mayhew being in on the search process…and how, exactly, do we feel about that?
“I don’t know what I expected, because we know Mayhew is staying in the front office in some capacity, maybe an assistant GM…I just kind of thought Myers, Spielman, Peters, and Harris was probably a good enough firm,” GP said. “If you wanna throw in Magic or Mitch Rales or something, cool, but man, after the last four years and the way this thing's gone with that front office, for Mayhew to be sitting right next to Peters in these interviews, I would have lost a lot of money on that bet.”
“Yeah, it is weird to me. Your point is I guess he's staying so it’s not unusual? It’s unusual,” Danny replied. “You were cheesing next to Ron Rivera, agreeing with everything he said, but behind the scenes you were part of this regime that was terrible. I'm upset about this, and I don’t like it. I don’t know if it’s like he’s winning the argument, standing on the table for Dan Quinn so they chose him over Raheem Morris or something else, but with all due respect to the guy who built a career for himself, I have no interest in him being involved in any decision other than what temperature to take the boiling water off so I can have afternoon tea. I would like him to be out of the organization.”
That doesn’t just go for Mayhew, in Danny’s head.
“All the Martys, everybody that's part of that old group that was overmatched and couldn't do it, and had no clue what the left hand was doing while the right hand was making the wrong call, I think this is a misstep and it’s wrong,” he said. “I understand there's a previous relationship there between Peters and Mayhew and they're friendly, I get that – but there are a lot of guys that you're friends with that you've worked with that probably shouldn't be involved in this organization, given the baggage of everything else. As a fan that watched, that’s discouraging to me, and I'm probably way more upset about that than most people.”
“I think there's two possibilities here in terms of Mayhew hanging around – and one would be Josh Harris doesn't want to pay him not to work,” GP replied. “When you deal with billionaires, sometimes what you find out pretty quickly is they didn't get rich by just wasting money. He’s under contract, and Adam Peters has never done this before, so maybe there’s value in having him around and Peters can bounce things off of him. I would save my frustration for if they extended him, but right now, you can pay him his money to write some reports and hang out and have an office and answer the phone when he's asked a question, or he could just be sitting on a beach somewhere drinking a daiquiri.”
Option two is that it’s possible Peters and Mayhew simply had a good rapport and WANTS to keep him around, but “I have a few years of sample that say recalibrate if you would for me, Adam.”
Danny then just went off on an EPIC rant - take a listen to that and their entire discussion above!
