G&D: Trey Wingo praises Jayden Daniels' composure, says Commanders can win NFC East

Sometimes we like to set up hot takes or guest quotes with a big, elaborate story of how they got there…but given that our producers labeled the audio of this segment “Trey Wingo tells us how good he thinks Jayden Daniels is” on both the website and the app, there’s no need – let’s just get to it:

“Just think about how quickly things have changed here: not only did we finally get rid of the stench of Daniel Snyder with competent leadership and ownership, then we hit on the right quarterback, and brought in the right head coach,” Wingo said. “I've known Jayden in a long time. I remember at Arizona State for my good friend Herm Edwards, and Herm was like, ‘this kid's got something - he has to develop and learn, but he has that quality that you want in all of these guys that are great.’ That’s why he started as a freshman at Arizona State and got a couple of huge wins for them, and then when it all fell apart, went to LSU and won the Heisman.”

Wingo now works with the DraftKings Network, and he told the guys that whenever he is asked about which team can go from worst to first, his default answer is the Commanders.

“I really like the idea that it could be the Commanders, because historically, nobody repeats in this division, and the Cowboys are proving that to be the case,” WIngo said. “The Eagles have a coach who'd rather chirp with his home fans instead of focusing on a much-needed win and the Giants are awful, so why not the Commanders? And I think I'm feeling pretty good about my assessment of them right now.”

And yeah, a lot of that, as much as Dan Quinn’s culture and Kliff Kingsbury’s scheme and Josh Harris and Adam Peters’ management have to do with it, comes down that hit on Daniels.

“My only concern with him was he was a little slight, but he had the best four-game start in terms of completion percentage since the AFL-NFL merger, and he’s made all the throws,” Wingo said. “I really like Jayden. He can make every throw, but more importantly, he has the composure, and that thing that you want natural leaders to have, and people feed off of that.”

Wingo thinks only Detroit and San Francisco are truly elite in the NFC, with Washington in a group with Minnesota, Green Bay, and Philadelphia in the next level – but he’s not sold on the former and something’s wrong with the latter, so why not the Commanders?
