Quarterback salaries are setting the pace in the NFL, and with the salary cap growing ‘exponentially year over year,’ we’re eventually going to see someone in the NFL making nine figures a year in some form – whether it be cap hit, guaranteed cash, or some combination of factors.
Cap expert J.I. Halsell joined BMitch & Finlay to talk about the cap and the Commanders’ future, Thursday…and let’s just say that to him, it’s VERY plausible that Jayden Daniels could come close to being that guy, even if he doesn’t get there.
All Brian Mitchell could say was ‘I was born too soon,’ but hey, it always helps to have cap room, too…in case, y’know, you want to guarantee money for a new acquisition like Deebo Samuel, or maybe take a run at a certain defensive player in a Midwest state…
“I think that they're in great shape. It’s a copycat league, right? So when you see how the Philadelphia Eagles manage their cap, and it seems like they've got just this ability, even with a starting quarterback contract on their books, to still be able to go sign and extend guys, the key to their approach has been to add these voidable years so that you can prorate the guaranteed money out as far as you can, which then reduces the cap numbers, which then allows for you to acquire more talent,” Halsell said. “When you think about layering that onto Washington, it's the same approach. They're in a great space from a cap space standpoint, but you don't want to kind of use all of your cap allocations on particular players, so if you can kind of manage the cap where you expand out those cap hits, then it allows just for you to have more flexibility, allows for you to go get more guys, and allows you to make the current roster happy by getting extensions done. If they do it the right way, they can kind of keep this momentum going moving forward.”
