Jay Gruden believes the Commanders will need to draft a quarterback next year to be Sam Howell’s eventual replacement, and the Junkies say it’s hard to argue against that logic, even if Howell has shown some promise.
“It’s hard to disagree with Jay Gruden…he knows what playoff caliber quarterbacking looks like. He knows what you need to not just make the playoffs, but go on a run to maybe win a Super Bowl.
“If this brass doesn’t think Sam has that upside, then you at least have to consider picking a quarterback in the top five or top 10, wherever you end up drafting.”
Howell leads the league in passing yards (while logging the most attempts), so he has shown that he can sling it, but the Junkies agree that if the goal is to eventually become Super Bowl contenders, Howell might have a ceiling that caps the team’s potential moving forward.
“I think he’s proven he can be a starter in the league,” EB said. “But if you’re an NFL franchise with goals of winning a Super Bowl, you don’t want just a guy.”
