Jaylin Lane ready to show off his versatility in whatever role Commanders need him

Jaylin Lane was his team leader in catches for three straight seasons, with 69 in his final year at Middle Tennessee before 41 and 39 in two seasons at Virginia Tech – but he never had more than 538 yards in his two years in Blacksburg.

Some people think he can start Day 1 in the NFL as a returner, though, given his three-time All-Conference return specialist nods – but whatever it is, Lane is ready to show the Commanders, and the fan base, he’s as versatile as they need him to be.

That includes, he said, being a Deebo Samuel-type weapon on screens, reverses, or other trickeration.

“We did a little bit of that at Middle Tennessee, not as much as I did at Tech, but I was a big downfield vertical threat at Middle Tennessee, and I came to Tech and it was a different offense,” Lane said. “We probably had a different reverse in there each and every week, so I knew that that was a guaranteed touch for me coming into the game, and it was cool to be able to showcase my abilities in that realm, and show what I can do with the ball in my hands.”

And if the Commanders need a deep threat? Lane is ready to turn on those jets there, too, like he said he did at Middle Tennessee.

“Just that vertical downfield threat, it’s something I definitely know I have in my bag, to threaten a defense downfield,” Lane said. “I’m a route-runner as well, and I got to showcase that a little bit at Tech with certain routes. I didn't always get the ball, but, you know, on tape, I feel like I was always open. So, coming in with a new offense, a lot of experienced guys and a lot of talented young guys, I'm ready to find my way in and make plays to help the team win.”
