John Riggins, Alonzo Mourning to receive Athletes For Hope Awards at December ceremony in DC

It’s always good to Play for Good, and this year, Riggo and ‘Zo are being honored for it.

Athletes for Hope has announced this year’s Play for Good award winners, and this year that list includes John Riggins, Alonzo Mourning, and Dr. Tim Schriver, who will all be honored at AFH’s Play for Good Gala on Saturday, December 6, at The Hamilton Hotel in D.C.

Riggo is being honored with the Morty Gudelsky Community Hero Award, which is beiig given to the Hall of Famer for his commitment to giving back to underserved populations and causes in the Greater DC region. Former Washington TE Vernon Davis (2023) and recently-retired ex-Mystics star Elena Delle Donne (2024) were the previous two recipients of this award, so Riggins is in great company.

Mourning, who starred at Georgetown before a xx-year NBA career, is getting the Mia Hamm Founders Award for his embodiment of Mia’s commitment to utilizing his global platform to help others in need.

And finally, Schriver, a Ph.D. and Chairman of the Board for Special Olympics, will receive the Gordon & Llura Gund Lifetime Hero Award.
Schriver is a DMV native who joined Special Olympics in 1996, and has spent three decades making a positive impact through sport.

Founded by Muhammad Ali, Andre Agassi, Mia Hamm, and nine other elite athletes in 2006, AFH is a national nonprofit organization that educates, encourages, and empowers athletes to find their passions and use their time to positively engage with their communities.

Launched in 2024, the AFH Athlete Leadership Council is spearheaded by Stephen Curry, Katie Ledecky, and Nathan Chen. Each are committed to continuing the legacy of AFH’s Founding Athletes and inspiring the next generation of sports leaders through their commitment to making the world a better place.

Under Armour will also receive the Corporate Community Impact Award at the Gala, which will be hosted by U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team legend Julie Foudy.
