Josh Harris is officially the new head owner of the Commanders, now leading the franchise he grew up rooting for as a local native.
So, naturally, Harris’ first comments as Commanders owner were rooted in his Washington roots, and how he intends to bring the franchise back to the glory days he witnessed when he was a young fan.
“As a lifelong Washington football fan…I’m incredibly excited and humbled for the opportunity to serve alongside my partners as stewards of this great franchise, on behalf of the city of Washington D.C.,” Harris said shortly after the sale was approved by owners at Thursday’s league meeting. “One of my first memories as a child was walking down East Capitol Street, walking into RFK Stadium, hearing the roar of the crowd.
“I grew up watching Sonny Jergenson, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, the Hogs, Joe Gibbs, Art Monk, and three Super Bowls. That’s the Washington I remember. This franchise is part of who I am and who I’ve become as a person.”
Then, in what was likely music to the ears of Commanders fans, Harris said his deep-seeded fandom won’t be enough to win over the fanbase. Only winning will accomplish that.
“Being a fan is not enough,” Harris said. “To be successful, we understand that we need to win championships, create a positive impact on the community, and create incredible memories and great experiences for our fanbase, much like I had as a youth growing up in Washington… I know what I have to do and that comes down to winning. We have to deliver and that’s what we are going to do.
“A new era of Washington football is here. It’s time to get to work.”
