BMitch & Finlay were taking some calls from the fans for a vibe check about how you feel about YOUR Commanders with the regular season approaching and an electric preseason game at FedEx in the bag – and AJ from Bethesda went OFF on being sick of hearing that Sam Howell was a fifth-round pick, invoking Brock Purdy (who was Mr. Irrelevant!) and hoping Howell will shed that pejorative soon.
At the same time as the call, JP Finlay got a Tweet calling him out for chirping on people who said Howell could've been a first-rounder.
“I don’t think it’s relevant that he was a fifth-rounder every time he makes a play, but I also don’t think that every time he makes a play, there has to be talk that he could’ve been a first-rounder,” JP said.
“He wasn’t a first-rounder, and they always say when Brock Purdy was drafted. That’s something the media does based off the info they’re given,” BMitch chimed in. “You know why? Because the people who chose them there don’t want to be wrong! Let’s stop trying to say what he could’ve been; if he was a first-rounder, he’d still have to develop. We don’t need that ‘I told you so’ crap.”
JP then invoked Tom Brady and how he is STILL to this day noted as the No. 199 pick of the draft, and simply said, “Who cares?”
“At this point, if you don’t want to hear it, don’t listen when we say it,” BMitch said. “If he’s a fifth-round pick, and he goes out and balls, then that makes it look even better, doesn’t it? If he was a first-rounder and did something wrong, it would get blown out of proportion, so being a fifth-round pick gives him a little more leeway.”
JP admits he and Brian don’t bring it up all that much, it’s more the national media that “doesn’t deal daily in Sam Howell” that use it as a talking point – with Landfill chiming in that people who watch Monday Night Football from non-DMV locales also may not know much, either.
And Mr. Finlay is all about the narrative going away.
“Even the D crew from those networks probably aren’t familiar with Sam Howell, and they’ll bring up he’s a fifth-rounder…WHO. GIVES. A. (BLEEP)!” JP screamed. “Who cares? If he balls out, it just makes the story better!”
“If you’re drafted in the fifth round and you go on to play better than that, it’s still a part of your story…why do I have to forget it?” BMitch replied. “He ain’t made it to the Hall of Fame yet, people, so let’s pump those brakes! We on this show are thrilled for Sam Howell, but I damn sure don’t like people telling me how to do my job, because I know how to do this job.”
And once again, JP brought up how silly it is to spin the narrative either way.
“You know what he is, and all that matters for burgundy and gold fans? He’s the starting quarterback,” JP said. “Who cares where he was drafted. Robert was the second overall pick, so was Wentz…how did that go? Where did Ryan Fitzpatrick get drafted? There are guys that were high that sucked and guys that were low that were great. Once you make the team and you’re the starting QB…WHO CARES?”
