Doc Walker lays out culture, Commanders hiring process expectations to the Junkies

Culture is going to be the name of the game for the Commanders, as Josh Harris has a blank slate on the football operations side to build what he wants in his image, so to speak.

Doc Walker, in his usual football season Tuesday visit to the Junkies, of course had a lot to say about the final game and the end of the Ron Rivera era…but, yes, we’re off to a good start with Josh Harris revealing a search committee to look for a new regime within hours of the old one being let go.

“I feel great about all this. I’m relieved that they’ve been behind the scenes and balling out,” Doc said. “Bob Myers is a winner, and he’s a Bruin, so I’m good with that. The Warriors were awful, and he resurrected the dead. I know due diligence doesn’t mean course will change, but it was a good feeling. I need people to pick the right coaches, keep them, and develop the team into winners.”

Doc has no real thoughts on the names they’ve requested to interview, because just a list of names ‘is only fodder for us in the media, and vetting them is not our job’ – and that goes for executives, coaches, AND players.

“To make that decision, you have to put in a lot of work. It sounds great, and you can sound real smart, but would you put your money on any one individual off the bat?” Doc asked. “If it’s your thing, you’re all over it, because that’s what you do. I’ve been in enough championship environments to know what to ask and what kind of person I’m looking for, and that’s the vetting process I’m more interested in. Guys can say whatever you want to hear, but I want to look at the film.”

And, Doc actually wants a guy who is ‘abnormal,’ telling a story abour legendary Grambling coach Eddie Robinson working players for a collegiate All-Star game like it was ‘the first week of training camp,’ and that’s the vibe you need to build a winning culture.

“I want a guy who understands he was lost and found daylight – like, look at Detroit: they were where we are now, and now they’re where we want to be,” Doc said. “I need someone who is desperate.”
