The Junkies knew Thursday morning there were two finalists for the Commanders GM job, eventual winner Adam Peters and runner-up Ian Cunningham, when they were on the air Friday morning, and one of them would truly begin the search for the next head coach.
Cunningham is with the Bears, who hold the No. 1 overall pick, and even at No. 2, the Commanders could still theoretically trade up to No. 1 to make sure they get the QB they want to kick off the new regime.
Being Ryan Poles’ right-hand man, Cunningham also knows what it looked like as the Bears traded out of No. 1 last year with Carolina, and now, perhaps, he and Poles can make a similar deal with Peters.
“I don’t see them trading that No. 1 pick to stay with Justin Fields, but I could be totally wrong on that,” Bish said. “Even though fields was playing better the last five or six weeks, the fourth quarter numbers just weren't very good. They were winning games and they had a winning record in the last two months, but I don't know if they pass on Caleb Williams.”
“It’s hard to read, because thy keep Eberflus, but then get rid of most of the offensive staff,” Cakes said. “So, it’s hard to figure out what they're gonna do.”
“The thing is, if you’re Eberflus, you're kind of in that Ron situation, where, like, is a rookie going to save your job?” EB shot back. “Caleb Williams is likely to come in and have some success, but he could struggle, and it’s likely Fields improves.”
According to a Kyle Lindeman, the Bars could get both of the Commanders’ second-round picks, Nos. 36 and 40, to flip flop in the first round – is that worth it?
“Depends on who they want or if they really love one of the guys,” was the consensus, with Bish noting that “maybe another team likes Caleb Williams a lot and will pay a lot more to move up further.”
Take a listen above to the Junkies’ entire debate about the move, both Caleb Williams and the Commanders versus the field, the possibility of trading down for a different QB, and more!
