Kevin Sheehan was off the air hours before news broke that Commanders owner Dan Snyder had agreed to sell the team to the ownership group led by Dan Snyder, but he still gave his instant reaction when the reports made waves on social media.
The summary? It is a new dawn for the franchise, and the first step towards making Washington a proud football city once again.
“Twenty four years of Snyder sucked the life out of one of the most passionate fan bases in sports,” Sheehan tweeted. “The majority stopped going to games, stopped watching games. This NFL city is a shell of what it was.
Reviving it could only happen with Dan's exit. The damage done is severe.
Recovery starts now.”
Indeed, fans did stop coming to games at the end of Snyder’s tenure, as the Commanders held the lowest attendance figures in the league last season. But with a new ownership group taking over, hope springs eternal once again in D.C., and Sheehan is basking in the optimism of a new era.
Of course, the deal still needs to be finalized and agreed upon by the other NFL owners, but that isn’t expected to be an issue, and Snyder is all but done as the Commanders owner, and a new face will lead the franchise for the first time since 1999.
