LISTEN: Dan Quinn and Adam Peters speak as Commanders camp opens, and BMitch & Finlay react
A lot of interesting things were said by Commanders GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn at their joint press conference to open training camp on Tuesday, and you can listen to it all below as it aired during BMitch & Finlay.
There were quite a few things that Brian and JP liked hearing from the brass, especially Dan Quinn's thoughts on being flexible with his systems to put his players in the best position to succeed, but what was the most interesting nugget?
Of course, it's Jayden Daniels, and specifically, the fact that he's not just going to be anointed QB1.
"The main story here is a commitment to competition, which they have both echoed throughout this off-season, and that Jayden Daniels isn't going to be gifted anything," JP said. "I think eventually he gets named QB1, but I'm cool with the current plan."
"Yeah, the whole thing about it is, we, for some reason, always wanna know who's the starter, but they're not playing real football for over a month," BMitch replied. "He explained it the best way I've ever heard it: you let him go through the process, and you want to see the whole process so you find out how quick he is getting better, and is he advancing every day or every week, instead of just putting him there. They say he'll know and we'll know – and they probably know already, but Ron preached about competition, then he gave people jobs and wondered why some guys didn't follow his lead. You'll see guys following the lead here, they all know Daniels is going to be the starting quarterback."
JP thinks Jayden was the better QB in the first wave of the preseason activities, so if it was about competition, maybe he 'won' it, but there's still no hurry.
"I also think they don't care about the perception. Ron, perhaps because he was tasked with like trying to lead the organization during a terrible time, or perhaps just who it is, cared about the perception, and I don't think these dudes do," JP said. "So, there is no pressing need for them to say who the starting quarterback is now. Everybody knows!"
"Yeah, and on top of it, they've come in here and they come with a straight football mentality; these guys are not worrying about nothing else but winning football games and getting their team better, and they're gonna establish the culture first," BMitch replied.
JP then said that 'the more Dan Quinn talks, the more you understand why they were so excited about him,' and yes folks, it's time once again to get excited for the Commanders.
