Last year, Brandon Aiyuk was nearing the end of his rookie deal, and there was a lot of smoke on the rumor mill about him wanting a trade to the Commanders to play with former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels.
This year, it’s Deebo Samuel who might now be on the trading block as he comes up to the end of his first contract, and as Yahoo! Sports' Matt Harmon told Grant & Danny Friday, the Commanders looking at trading for Deebo makes a lot of sense, too.
“It’s an interesting offseason for Washington because obviously, the team exceeded expectations by leaps and bounds, but you come into this offseason and there are a lot of needs because there are so many veteran free agent rentals that they hit it out of the park with last year,” Harmon said. “They have an abundance of cap space and I think a real need to make this offense as dynamic as possible, and they can make it better by essentially bringing in just more pass catching juice. It’s not necessarily the strongest wide receiver draft, and there will be a lot of veteran free agents available who maybe are past their best days, and what makes Deebo interesting for this team is the connection with Adam Peters, and the fact that he’s not really a traditional wide receiver, but somebody that could be deployed well on some of these layup concepts that Kliff Kingsbury likes to have in the offense. And, with a lot of cap room, even if Deebo is overpaid, and you probably have to take on a contract you don't necessarily want, they're one of these teams that has more cap space than they could possibly spend.”
