The Commanders are all but locked in to return to the district.
The DC council voted 9-3 on Friday afternoon in favor of the RFK Stadium bill, marking a return to the RFK site for the franchise that vacated it back in 1996. Eight votes in favor was the minimum requirement.
The new stadium will cost $3.8 billion, with the Commanders funding at least $2.7 million of the project. The city will fund the remaining roughly $1.1 billion.
The 65,000-seat domed stadium will serve as another landmark in a new era of the organization, which began when Josh Harris and company bought the team from Dan Snyder. Now, the team will return to the place it used to call home for 35 years, dating back to 1961.
The council will vote again on Sept. 17 to make it officially official, but given the outcome of Friday’s vote, that feels like a sure thing, and the area where RFK currently stands will be the new home of the Commanders.
The stadium is expected to open in 2030.
