Pacman Jones got his nickname because of the way he gobbled up throws coming his way and gobbled up wide receivers’ stats – but the last time he was on with Grant & Danny, he was crushing a former teammate and then-new Washington CB William Jackson, whom he was right about being not great.
Did he have a similar outlook on new-ish Commanders corner Marshon Lattimore?
“I think Lattimore’s a good player, he’s just gotta gid rid of all the nagging injuries; when you have those, you go out and your body ain't ready, you can be in bad positions sometimes,” Jones told the guys. “You ain't practicing, you ain't getting the reps, but I I think he has a higher upside, so I wouldn’t be worried.”
It’s a different game than even when Jones played, which also changes the calculus.
“I think it’s harder now to play defense than when I played; you can barely touch (receivers) now, and back then, you could at least beat them up a little bit. It’s so wishy-washy of what you can do as a cornerback right now, so it’s hard,” Jones said. “You just can’t touch anybody, and everyone likes points. People want to see big numbers and touchdowns, so I don’t think it will go back to that old way, because everyone wants to see points on the board.”
A defensive shift away from giving up explosives is something Danny also sees, and Pacman agrees that a lot of shell coverage is changing offenses too.
“I agree, and there's no disguising either; I think disguising is a big thing of confusing a quarterback, but you hardly ever see it. You pretty much know right after breaking the huddle if it’s single-high or two-high,” Jones said.
