Sam Cosmi will have his torn ACL repaired on Tuesday, and then, the offseason work begins.
“We’ll go from there, and I’ll be here for the long haul, so hopefully I’ll be back on the field as soon as possible next year,” Cosmi said Monday. “There’s nothing that I want more than to be on the field battling with my brothers, so I will do everything in my power to get my body on peak physical shape to be able to be ready for next year.”
The Commanders will have a lot of tough decisions to make with personnel this offseason, but Cosmi is not one of them, having signed a four-year extension in September. He’s going to be one of the last, if not the last, players drafted in the Ron Rivera era to play in DC, but what the Commanders have done going from 4-13 to 12-5 and the NFC Title Game wouldn’t have happened if not for the way a team that was more than half turned over from last year came together.
“It’s a testimony to what we’ve been able to do, especially in the beginning of the season – no one thought we would even have a shot to be where we are today,” Cosmi said. “But the brotherhood and connection we built this year, believing in each other and in DQ and AP and what they were doing, just showed us what we can do when a band of brothers comes together for a common goal.”
And even better than the success on the field for Cosmi, who was 19-31-1 in his first three seasons here, is the success in the stands.
“One of the biggest things that brings me joy is to see the fan base back, and the love, and the videos I get to see of their reactions of how we’ve been playing,” Cosmi said. “I have family members that have lifelong ties to this stuff, and to see their passion and tears in their eyes, that’s the joy of being able to see what we’ve been able to do this season. I’m excited that we have expectations now, because that’s cool. I’m excited for them, and super grateful and thankful for everything this year has brought – the lessons, the relationships, all the moments we had. What a year.”
