People believe it to be a myth that the man born George Herman Ruth pointed his finger toward the centerfield stands at Wrigley Field in the fifth inning of Game 3 of the 1932 World Series before hitting a two-strike Charlie Root offering to the right of straightaway center some 450 feet away.
The video is grainy. The contemporaneous reports are murky. But that is not the case for Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, the morning of the 2023 NFL Draft, calling his shot about who he would select with the No. 16 overall pick.
"The big thing for us is if Emmanuel Forbes is sitting there, the opportunity for us to get our guy," Rivera said in a video the team posted on social media late Thursday night.
Forbes was there, and Washington selected the cornerback from Mississippi State with the No. 16 pick.
Of course, Rivera knew who the guy was, it appears the New England Patriots, who also were in need of help in the secondary, knew Forbes was the Commanders guy and managed to trade down to aquire more draft capital and silll get the cornerback they wanted Christian Gonzalez out of Oregon at pick No. 17.
And there are questions about if the Commanders would have been able to wait for a few more picks and trade down as New England did and still get Forbes as well.
