The vote by NFL owners on Dan Snyder's sale of the Washington Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris is supposed to take place next week in Minnesota.
But a new report from the Washington Post says there are "issues in the legal negotiations" between Snyder and the league that "threatened to complicate" the approval process and the closing of the $6 billion sale.
The Post reports that the complications are related to legal issues related to the October 2021 leaking of emails to the media that led to the resignation of Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden. However, it is not clear as of late Wednesday if the complications will impact the planned vote. But a source to the Post classified those complications as "significant" and "not just some small snag," indicating they could delay the approval and closing.
Earlier on Wednesday, ESPN published a story on the leaking of those emails that laid out the possibility that Snyder (or lawyers representing him) were the possible origin of the leaking of the emails, which contained racist and anti-gay language by Gruden, in an attempt for the Commanders owner to curry favor with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. But the leaking of those emails instead led to more trouble for the owner, led to more investigations – both by the league and Congress – and led to the sale to the Harris-led group.
A source told the Post that there is the possibility that Snyder and his attorneys are trying to extract last-minute concessions from the league on legal indemnification from a lawsuit the former Raiders coach filed against the NFL and Goodell. That source said the issues will be resolved in time for next Thursday's vote.
The Post also said the complications could be from Snyder's sister, Michele, a part owner who needs to agree to provisions of the sale agreement, and that Snyder is now not willing to sign an affidavit that he did not leak the emails, which he had previously been willing to do. (Another source said Snyder "has not refused to sign an affidavit" about the leaking of emails.)
