A lot of the Commanders' hopes for the upcoming season will ride on the shoulders of an unproven fifth-round pick at quarterback in Sam Howell.
JP Finlay hopes Washington fans can keep that sentence in perspective when setting expectations for Howell and the Commanders. After all, the stories of Tom Brady, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Brian Sipe, and Roger Staubach are the very rare exceptions, not the rule, when it comes to QBs drafted in the later rounds.
"It's an uphill climb for this to work," Finlay said. "The hit rate at this position is below 30 percent for all rounds.
"We remember the first-round quarterbacks that don't make it. there are A LOT of fourth, fifth, sixth-rounders who don't make it, and we just don't remember them."
On the other side, BMitch showed much more optimism for Howell, though not because of Howell himself. He believes if the right pieces are around him, he will be able to thrive, regardless of where he was drafted.
"When you get the guys in the later rounds that make it…you have to put the right people around him," BMitch said. "I hope the skill on offense around him is enough.
"When you truly look at it, it doesn't make a damn difference where you're drafted. If you don't have the right coaches and players around you, you're not gonna have success."
