Joe Theismann excited for Commanders' return to 'hallowed ground' that is RFK site

Joe Theismann was the one who got to narrate the video posted ahead of the Commanders’ announcement of a pending return to RFK, giving his take on his days at RFK.

And as he told BMitch and Finlay Wednesday, it was one of the biggest honors he’s had in his life – and he’s grateful that Josh Harris is bringing the team full-circle, and back home.

One thing is for sure: he can’t wait to be there for the first game of the RFK 2.0 era when it happens.

“It’ll be a flashback and memories, just to pull into that parking lot. The couple of times I've been there for different shows and things that I've done, just to pull into the parking lot and remember where I parked my car, and remember the walk into the stadium, there’s so many wonderful memories,” Theismann said. “And of course, I got hurt in that stadium too, so it’s like my career started there and my career ended there. So, for me to be able to do it again, it's, it's the start of a fresh new beginning. I think of it for the young players that we have, who will have a chance to take a step back in history; no matter how it’s constructed, it’s still on hallowed ground, and you’re walking on hallowed ground where the fans were absolutely such a huge part of what we were able to accomplish.”

And, perhaps, one day, he’ll see something that rivals his favorite moment at RFK as a player.

“It's my favorite in football, even more so than the Super Bowl: the 1983 NFC Championship game against the Dallas Cowboys. We're beating the Cowboys, I'm standing on the sidelines at the end of the game, and literally, the fans are pounding their feet on these seats and the ground was shaking,” Joe said. “They brought in some aluminum seats to create capacity, and that was so unreal to think there was that much power and energy in that stadium that it could affect the earth beneath my feet. Winning a Super Bowl goes without saying, but to beat the Cowboys at our place, with the fans doing what they were doing, that memory stays with me forever.”
