Grant Paulsen refers to his good friend (and friend of the show) Tress Way as ‘The People’s Punter,’ and while he might not quite be Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in terms of being the ‘People’s Champion,’ he’s pretty damn popular among Commanders fans.
Way is back for 2025 on a one-year deal, but he made quite the declarative statement about his career beyond that when he joined GP live at the Lost Rhino in Ashburn Wednesday: ‘I don’t want to play anywhere else.’
Of course, it’s pretty easy to be anywhere when you’re a punter but rarely have to punt because your team already does go for a lot of fourth downs…
“The biggest thing is the net average is what gets you into the Pro Bowl every year, but your inside the 20 percentage will show (your prowess),” Way said. “My favorite place to punt from is the 35-yard line, because you can just cut it loose for 50. I love to punt, but I understand we don’t want to punt – but Kliff (Kingsbury) was the bomb. He’d look at me and go, ‘Tress, how many times did you punt this game?’ I’d say one, and he’d be like ‘oh, that’s my bad!’”
