Zach Ertz now has a touchdown in three straight games, one of his three grabs on Sunday a 10-yard TD reception from Jayden Daniels in the Commanders’ rout of Tennessee.
Turns out, it probably shouldn’t have been him, as Jayden found him deep into his progression on a read option.
“I wasn’t really primary option on the play. Just one of those plays where the first read was probably covered, and then Jayden just kind of reset and found me over the middle,” Ertz told Chris Russell in the locker room after the game. “We have a lot of chemistry, got a lot of time on task together, and I feel like he's starting to really understand my body language and I’m understanding exactly what he wants. That’s what it's all about for me: making sure I see the game the same way he does and we’re just growing in our relationship. We feel like we have another step to take as a receiver or tight end and quarterback, and we’re excited about the last four games of the year.”
The TD was historic, as Ertz is now one of six tight ends in NFL history with 750 catches and at least 50 touchdowns, and the names he’s with are easily one-namers: Gonzalez, Witten, Kelce, Gates, Sharpe.
“It’s hard to reflect on that, and hard to reflect in general when you're playing this game. Obviously I played for a lot of coaches that have believed in me for long time, and I’ve played with a lot of good quarterbacks,” Ertz said. “I try and I dedicate a lot to this game, I sacrifice a lot for this game, and it's just a testament to the people around me. I don't think I've done this by myself by any means, and I'm thankful for the Lord, obviously. When I’m done, whenever that is, it will be a time to reflect, but right now I'm just focused on being the best version of myself for this team, and I still feel like I got a lot of good football left.”
