The next big quarterback to be on the move could very well be Sam Darnold.
With the Houston Texans playing hardball with Deshaun Watson, and the Seattle Seahawks not willing to put Russell Wilson on the trading block just yet, the New York Jets quarterback could be the next domino to fall, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.
Breer wrote in his Monday column that eight teams have been in contact with the Jets about Darnold, but the Jets also want to see Zach Wilson and Justin Fields throw at their pro days, March 26 and March 30, respectively, before making the final call.
However, the Jets have “relayed some flexibility on that to other teams.”
This offseason has been one of the hottest quarterback markets in recent memory.
The Lions and Rams have already swapped QBs in Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff while the Colts traded for Eagles QB Carson Wentz.
The Chicago Bears, Washington Football Team, Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans and even the Seattle Seahawks are all teams that either are, or could be, in the market for a new quarterback depending on how some of their own situations shake out first.
The Jets drafted Darnold with the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and Breer noted the team would likely want a better package than what the Cardinals got for Josh Rosen — a second and a fifth.
It is unlikely Darnold would net the Jets a first rounder, though.
While only 23 years old, Darnold has had an inconsistent go since making his debut with the Jets. He has shown flashes of potential but has struggled with turnovers and staying healthy.
Through 38 career games, Darnold has a 59.8 completion percentage, throwing 45 touchdowns to 39 interceptions, plus 20 fumbles.
Those are obviously some concerning numbers for any team interested in trading for Darnold, but again, due to his age many believe Darnold can still be salvaged if placed in the right situation.
