Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith left the team’s game against the San Francisco 49ers at the half after sustaining an apparent leg injury.
Toward the end of the first half, Smith was seen on the bench with his right leg wrapped and a member of the training staff working on loosening the calf muscle.
This was the same leg Smith broke in a gruesome leg injury in November 2018, suffered numerous complications, and had needed 18 surgeries.
Smith did return after he was seen with his leg wrapped and the Fox broadcast reported Washington said he was suffering from “muscle soreness.”
Washington head coach Ron Rivera told the media after the game Smith was experiencing soreness and tightness in his right leg and x-rays at halftime did not show any reason for concern. "An abundance of caution," the reason Smith did not return.
"He strained the calf, basically," Rivera said, before adding Smith could have returned to the game if his replacement, Dwayne Haskins, suffered an injury.
In the first half, Smith struggled to get going. He had just eight completions on 19 attempts for 57 yards. His final pass of the first half was an interception.
However, it was the second-year quarterback who was the team’s quarterback for their opening drive of the second half.
Washington announced Smith was questionable to return.
In his first drive as a quarterback, Haskins and the offense went 73 yards on 11 plays. Dustin Hopkins converted a 21-yard field goal to put Washington up 16-7.
Despite struggling to move the ball on offense in the second half, Washington held on to win 23-15 to improve to 6-7 on the season.
