WFT joins league-wide protest against racial injustice

Players and coaches around the NFL participated in demonstrations before Week 1 games in a protest against racial injustice and calling for an end to systemic racism in America.

At FedEx Field, after warmups, players and coaches from the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Football Team locked arms at midfield during the Howard University Choir's performance of "Lift Every Voice and Sing," which is often referred to as the Black national anthem.

Washington then returned to their sideline and the entire team took a knee as the names of victims of violence, systemic racism, and police brutality were shown on the stadium's video screens.

Every player on Washington's roster stood during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner," but several players raised their fists. Players with a raised fist included: Dwayne Haskins, Montez Sweat, Logan Thomas, Antonio Gibson, Greg Stroman, Keith Ismael.

An athlete's raised fist in the Black Power salute during the national anthem came to prominence when U.S. sprinters John Carlos' and Tom Smith's protests during the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.

The Eagles players didn't return from the locker room until after the national anthem was played.

Washington would go on to win, 27-17.
