Safety Landon Collins has been placed on Injured Reserve with a season-ending Achilles injury, the Washington Football Team announced Tuesday, confirming earlier reports that had assumed the worst about the injury he suffered on Sunday.
Collins hit the turf early in the second quarter of Washington's 25-3 victory over Dallas, needing to be helped off the field after chasing down quarterback Andy Dalton. Collins immediately began grabbing the back of his leg and had to be carted off the field. He later told NFL reporter Josina Anderson he felt a "pop," often a tell-tale sign of an Achilles injury, and that he'd require surgery.
"It's always tough when you lose a good football player," Washington defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio said Monday. "He's a tough guy that was voted a team captain by his peers. Obviously, any time that happens, it's something you have to work to overcome. We're just going to ask him to heal up and stay positive. We're going to carry on. We're going to continue on and expect to play well."
Prior to his injury Sunday, Collins made a crucial play for Washington, perhaps his biggest in two seasons since arriving on a six-year, $84 million free agency contract in 2019. With Dallas backed up near its own end zone in the first quarter, quarterback Andy Dalton dropped back for a pass, only to be met by Collins, who executed a well-timed swim move to get around the edge of Dallas' line before swatting the ball free from Dalton's hand. Dallas recovered the ball but in its own end zone, causing a safety and giving Washington the first two points of the game.
Now Collins tells Anderson he's scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday.
Washington has signed safety Jeremy Reaves from its practice squad in a corresponding move.
In a corresponding move, the team signed safety Jeremy Reaves from the practice squad. Rookie Kamren Curl took Collins' place in the game at strong safety, with Washington leaving Deshazor Everett at free safety.
