NFL postpones Washington-Philadelphia game until Tuesday

The NFL has agreed to move the Washington Football Team's upcoming game against the Eagles from Sunday to Tuesday.

With 21 Washington players sidelined on the Covid-19 list, including starting quarterback Taylor Heinicke, the NFL has postponed the Washington-Philadelphia game — which was originally scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. — to Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Albert Breer was first to report.

Additionally, the NFL will postpone two other games clouded by the same circumstance, creating a rare block of four games to be played over two nights on Monday and Tuesday.

While the NFL's Covid policy for the 2021 was intended to show harshness towards teams that cannot field a team due to an outbreak, it also left wiggle room for teams with a high vaccination rate, and Washington was among the teams to meet the high vaccination threshold.

As Tom Pelissero learned in July:

While it remains unclear just how many Washington players currently on the Covid list are vaccinated, per NFL protocol, vaccinated players only need two negative tests spaced at least 24 hours apart in order to be cleared to play. So it's quite possible the extra two days afforded by the postponement could drastically impact how many players are available to play by Tuesday.

There's also a downside for Washington, which will now be playing on four days' rest heading into its Week 16 game in Dallas next Sunday.

The Washington Football Team has confirmed the postponement.
