Washington Football cancels free-agent workout due to COVID-19 concerns, according to The Athletic’s Ben Standig.

The workout, which involved several free agents, was called off, reportedly, “out of an abundance of caution,” according to NFL Network’s Mark Garafolo.

According to Standig, several free agents were in Washington this weekend for a workout after Washington’s Week 4 game, but the players were called by the team Monday and told the team decided to cancel the workout. “They were told this was a team choice rather than a league mandate,” Standig said citing an unnamed source.

Garafolo noted Washington “does not have any positive COVID tests right now” and this move was the team “being cautious.”

One reason to be cautious is head coach Ron Rivera is currently battling cancer and considered high risk.

Rivera said the team canceled the workout because "We just want to make sure." and said to the players who were sent home as a result, "We truly apologize."

The Tennessee Titans experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 last week, which resulted in nearly 20 players and coaches tested positive. Their Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers was delayed until Week 7.

After New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the Patriots game against the Kansas City Cheifs was postponed Sunday. Those teams will play Monday night.
