Washington guard Joshua Garnett retires (who?)

The Washington Football Team announced the retirement of offensive guard Joshua Garnett on Tuesday, which might leave you wondering... who?

Selected as a first-round pick (28th overall) by the 49ers in 2016, Garnett struggled to stay on the field due to injuries after his rookie season and was eventually released by San Francisco in Aug. 2019.

After going unsigned through the 2019 season, Garnett signed a one-year deal with Detroit in Feb. 2020 but was waived during training camp.

Washington took a flyer on Garnett in August, waiving him two weeks later only to add him to its practice squad.

Garnett was promoted to the active roster ahead of Washington's Week 3 game against Cleveland. In total, he appeared in three games for Washington this season, including one offensive snap and nine special teams snaps.

Garnett played in 25 total games with 11 career starts.

And thus concludes the illustrious career of Joshua Garnett, one of the last remaining vestiges to the Trent Baalke 49ers.

Washington added defensive end Casey Toohill — claimed off waivers on Oct. 14 — in a corresponding move on Tuesday. Toohill was a seventh-round pick by Philadelphia in 2020 and was waived by the Eagles last week. He had to clear an NFL-mandated six days of pre-entry COVID-19 testing before joining the active roster.
