(670 The Score) Just when the White Sox appeared set to take control against the Twins in a key AL Central game Monday evening, deplorable baserunning resulted in a rarely seen result.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh and runners at first and second with no outs, AJ Pollock flew out into an 8-5 triple play when teammates Adam Engel and Yoan Moncada each had a mental gaffe on the bases and didn’t tag up as Twins center fielder Byron Buxton made a great running catch in the gap. Engel was the baserunner on second and looked like he might tag up, but as Moncada barreled from first to second base at full speed, Engel took off for third base as well. Moncada nearly caught him on the base path as neither looked to see that Buxton caught the ball.
“That is something, again, you will probably never see again as long as you watch baseball,” NBC Sports Chicago color analyst Steve Stone said on the broadcast.
