The Wizards are sticking with head coach Wes Unseld Jr. next season, and while The Sports Junkies see Unseld as a fine leader, they can’t understand why president and general manager Tommy Sheppard isn’t more motivate to blow things up and start anew, as things clearly haven’t been working for the franchise in recent years.
“I think you gotta give Wes another shot,” Drab said. “He’s had a lot of injuries, but he’s on the thinnest of ice. I am rooting for him, I just don’t get the construction of this team. It just doesn’t make sense. I can’t even tell if it’s Wes’ fault, because they’ve missed so many games.
“What happened to Tommy the mover and shaker, unafraid to blow things up? Now he’s about to anchor this again with [Kristaps Porzingis] and [Kyle] Kuzma?”
The Wizards were indeed hit hard with injuries this season, contributing to their slide down the stretch, but the Junkies also don’t see how bringing back Unseld next season will provide any further clarity on his capabilities as a winning head coach if most of the same players are back, as it would likely mean more injuries and less answers.
“I still find that hard to believe that they’re gonna bring back KP and Kuzma,” JB said. “Maybe they bring back Porzingis so with [Bradley] Beal you have a strong 1-2 there, but I think you’re gonna get more of the same next season. Beal is gonna get hurt next year.
He’s gonna miss time, and he’s untradeable because he’s making $48 million.
“Beal just smashing into the wall. He’s just gonna be one of those guys who is gonna be broken. It’s just a trainwreck.”
